WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – A Wausau man already charged with robbing two bars in Marathon County is now accused of being involved with a botched holdup of two people outside the Wendy’s restaurant in Rib Mountain in October.

Prosecutors charged Mariano Valera Wednesday with being party to the attempted armed robbery October 10th. A judge ordered Valera jailed on a $10,000 cash bond pending a preliminary hearing next Wednesday.

“Valera admitted to his involvement, saying he was merely the driver,” according to a police report summarizing a sheriff detective’s interview with Valera on November 2nd. “He indicated he did not realize that ‘Castro’ intended to rob the people at the restaurant. Had he known that, he would not have driven him there.”

‘Castro’ is the street name for Abraham Robertson, the man police suspect of trying to rob an elderly man and his sister in their car in the restaurant parking lot. Prosecutors filed two charges Tuesday of armed robbery with threat of force against Robertson.

Robertson has not been arrested and police say he has family in the Milwaukee area. Marathon County sheriff's Detective Sean McCarthy said an arrest warrant would be issued for Robertson if one had not already been approved.

The 18-year-old Robertson is 6-foot-2, weighs 264 pounds and has dreadlocks in his most recent booking mugshot. Anyone with information should call police at 715-261-1200.

The victim, Steve Zulawnik, grabbed Robertson’s gun and pointed it away, foiling the robbery. A restaurant employee who was taking out trash at the time also interrupted the holdup and scared Robertson and Valera off.

Valera has been charged with robbing Cliffhanger’s Bar in Schofield on October 3rd and Piggy’s Pub in Marathon on November 2nd. He has been bound over for trial and will be arraigned on two armed robbery charges and one burglary charge next week.
