(Park Twp., MI - WHTC News) - Tragedy struck West Ottawa High School yesterday when a recent graduate died and two of its juniors were injured in a crash about two miles away from its Park Township campus.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Steve Kempker, 18-year-old Adrian Beltran, with two 16-year-old passengers in Shelby Beelen and Taylor Brock, was driving her car northbound on 168th Avenue, while 55-year-old Valorie Weerstra of West Olive was heading eastbound on New Holland Street in her SUV. The two vehicles collided, with the car careening into a nearby utility pole, causing it to snap and downing some power lines.
Beltran was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County Medical Examiner’s office. The two other teens, along with Weestra, were taken to Holland Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. A brief power outage in the area was addressed when Consumers Energy crews replaced the damaged pole.
The incident remains under investigation.
