WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) Marathon County will enact a stricter smoking ban when Wisconsin goes smoke-free on July 5th. The county will no longer allow smoking on property it owns. That includes areas outside county office buildings and most county-owned parks.

The new rules will impact county employees, making it more difficult for them to take cigarette breaks during their workday. Administrator Brad Karger says the county does not want to clean up discarded cigarette butts, and will encourage employees to quit smoking altogether.

The state-wide smoking ban covers indoor areas and public workplaces.

There is an exemption for Marathon Park, which is used as a campground and hosts the Wisconsin Valley Fair and other large public events.
