TERRE HAUTE (WIBQ) - Terre Haute residents concerned over ST Construction plans to operate a gravel pit in their Terre Town neighborhood met with Mayor Duke Bennett Tuesday night voicing their concerns over the proposed plan. Residents expressed concern over property values, traffic, and children safety. They also discussed health related issues such as well-water contamination, and health effects from the dust a gravel pit would bring.
Mayor Bennett called the session a healthy discussion and said he was able to give residents some advice on how to deal with the issue. ST Construction still has several hurdles to overcome before being allowed to operate the facility. The company needs a permit from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. That process is in the public comment phase. If the state panel gives it's approval the Zoning Board would then have to act on a rezoning request for the pit.
