TERRE HAUTE (WIBQ) - Vigo County Sherriff John Marvel has voiced his desire to upgrade the security video surveillance system at the Vigo County Jail.  The current system is outdated, and still record footage on VHS tapes, which are quickly becoming extinct.

According to Deputy Cheif Greg Ewing, a new system would cost the jail around $80,000.  Grants could help cover around half of the costs, with the rest of the money coming from the commisarry fund.  This fund is profits from inmates purchasing items such as candy bars and coffee, and is to only be spent on the jail or inmates, which would wualify the new security system.

The new system would be all digital, so there would be no need for VHS cassettes, and would also upgrade the cameras in the jail, some of which have been in use for nearly twenty years.  Vigo County Commisioners have already approved the move, pending a legal contract for installation of the new system.
