WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Washington Wizards signed free agent guard Earl Boykins on Wednesday to bolster their injury hit backcourt.

Boykins, 33, has averaged 9.4 points and 3.4 assists over 10 NBA seasons that has included stints with New Jersey, Cleveland, Orlando, L.A. Clippers, Golden State, Denver, Milwaukee and Charlotte.

"Earl is a proven veteran point guard who will provide us with leadership and stability off of the bench," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said on the team's website (http://www.nba.com/wizards).

Last season Boykins, one of the shortest men ever to play in the NBA, played for Virtus Bologna in the Italian A League.
