Tigers Snap Four-Game Skid Posted January 19, 2011 by Will Hilderbrand

MT. ZION, Ill. (WPRS)-It has been twenty long days, but finally the  Paris Tigers are back on the winning side of a scoreboard.

The Tigers snapped a four-game losing streak with 41-38 thriller over the Mt. Zion Braves. The win was the first for Paris since the Effingham St. Anthony tourney on December 29th.

Paris got off to a sluggish start allowing Mt. Zion's Grant Pyatt to score easily in the lane, taking a 14-8 lead after one quarter. The second quarter would shift the momentum to the black and orange as Dalten Temples and Cory Cunningham were able to drive and create opportunities to take the lead 23-18 going into the half.

The third quarter would be a back-and-forth battle as the Tigers and Braves would trade baskets, until Mt. Zion tied the game at 28. Paris would hit the final basket of the quarter and take a slim 30-28 lead.

Mt. Zion would take the lead late in the fourth quarter with two minutes remaining 38-37. Paris lost the ball on a mishandled pass and Mt. Zion would drive to the basket on a layup. Josh Cary came from behind and blocked the shot, shifting momentum in Paris' favor. Cary then scored off of a missed Dalten Temples shot to give the Tigers a 39-38 lead. Clay Bess would also score on a wide open layup to make the score 41-38. Mt. Zon had two chances to tie the game with less than 20 seconds left but the Tigers defense clamped down and sealed the Victory.

Josh Griffin and Cary chipped in 10 points, while Cunningham scored nine for Paris. Coach Nugent praised his teams toughness and composure on not giving up the lead late in the victory. Paris improves to 12-6 on the season and 3-3 in Apollo conference.

The Tigers now will prepare for a tough rivalry game in Ernie Eveland gym against county foe Chrisman Friday. The game will be broadcast on Paris Country 1440 WPRS and online at wprsam.com

Lady Tigers Take Care of Charleston Posted January 13, 2011 by Will Hilderbrand

PARIS, Ill. (WPRS)-The Paris Lady Tigers snapped a two-game conference losing skid with a 50-33 victory of the Charleston Trojans.

Even though the margin was double digits, it was not an easy victory for the Tigers.

Charleston started the game with a three-pointer from Madison Spence, but then the Tigers attacked the paint and capitalized off second chance opportunities and missed free throws to take a 14-9 lead after one. Both teams struggled in the second quarter, only scoring a combined nine points. The Tigers were able to extend the lead to 20-12 going into the half.

The second half saw ups and downs for both teams. The Trojans fed the ball to Megan O'Dell with an early three, but Paris took a timeout and regrouped. The tactic worked as the Tigers were able to go inside, attack the basket, draw fouls and go to the line taking a 32-20 lead. Charleston Coach Jeff Miller was charged with a technical and Madison Spence knocked down a three and the Trojans clawed back to five with a 9-2 run.

Paris took complete control late as Alexis Barnes and Allison Englum comibined for 11  of the teams 16 fourth-quarter points, and Kati Johnson added a late three to put the game out of Charleston's reach. Paris improves to 11-7 and 4-4 in Apollo Conference play.

The JV game saw another big victory for the Lady Tigers as they won their fourth straight game by double digits, with a 54-12 win over Charleston.

Paris will travel Monday to Effingham, where the Tigers have lost both games this season and four straight against the Hearts. The game will be heard on Paris Country 1440 and wprsam.com.

Lady Tigers can't stop Salem Posted January 7, 2011 by Kyle West

By: Will Hildebrand, WPRS Sports
PARIS, Ill. (WPRS)-The Paris Lady Tigers played a hard fought game against first-place Salem, but it wasn't enough in a 49-30 loss Thursday night.

Paris put up a good defensive throughout but early foul trouble and missed shot opportunities put the Tiger's in a hole.

Paris got off to a sluggish start trailing 11-6 after one and then things got worse as the Tiger's committed 12 second quarter turnovers and failed to hit a shot from the field and trailed 27-9 at the half.

The offense ended their 13-minute shooting drought with a Jessica Rose three-pointer, but Salem was still able to push their lead above 20 thanks to the play of guard Kirstie Owen. The Wildcast led 42-17 after three quarters.

Allison Englum hit a three pointer at the start of the fourth and the Tiger's were able to put up double digits for the first time in a quarter and closed the deficit within 20. Englum led the Tigers in scoring with 6 points, while Rose and Alexis Barnes had 4 each.

The loss puts the Lady Tigers at 10-6 and 3-3 in the conference, as they will travel to Mt. Zion Monday to take on the Lady Braves. That game can be heard here on Paris Country 1440 WPRS and online at wprsam.com

Technical Issues Posted January 6, 2011 by Kyle West

January 6th, 2010

We apologize for not streaming the game this evening on our new Paris Sports Blog.  Our internet service provider has a large regional outage in Ohio, and will not allow us to access the necessary websites to stream the game.  We hope this will be a very isolated incident, and the stream will be back for Friday evening's game.  We will have a story recapping this evenings game up on the blog tomorrow.

Thanks For Your Patience,

Paris Boys Fall to Marshall Posted January 5, 2011 by Kyle West

PARIS, Ill. (WPRS) - The Paris Tiger boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker Tuesday night to the Marshall Lions 53-50. Paris could not have an answer for Marshall's three point shooting as the Lions shot over 50 % from beyond the arc, draining nine three-pointers in the gamr.

Marshall got off to a quick start, taking a 13-2 lead after one quarter. The Tiger's showed some improvement in the second period, but were no match for Logan Cannady who reeled of 13 of his 21 points in the second quarter. Paris missed several close shot opportunities and only shot 16% from the field and trailed Marshall 26-15 at the half.

Coach Nugent's Tiger's made some adjustments as Paris outscored Marshall 15-3 in the third quarter, thanks to the patience of Clay Cunningham and Ethan Mason. Cunningham scored the first six points of the second half and the duo were able to move the ball in tranisition effectively to Josh Cary and Josh Griffin.

Paris had a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter and the two teams traded baskets throughout the quarter until midway through the quarter and had the lead 39-36. Marshall reeled off three straight three-pointers and took the lead 45-39. Paris played catch up throughout the remainder of the game and never could catch the Lions, cutting the lead to three with eight seconds. Marshall missed two free throws with less than a second to play and Dalten Temples long shot at the buzzer was offline.

Two Tiger players scored in double figures, Cary scored 12 points and Dalten Temples had 10. The Tiger's had  some struggles at the free throw line but fell short as the team went 9-21 from the charity stripe.

The loss is the second straight for the Tigers, who fall to 11-4 on the season. The Tigers will be back at home in Ernie Eveland Gym Friday night to take on Salem in Apollo Conference play. You can catch the game right here on Paris Country 1440 WPRS and online at wprsam.com.

Paris Lady Tigers Defeat Robinson Posted January 4, 2011 by Kyle West

ROBINSON, Ill. (WPRS)-The Paris Lady Tigers started 2011 with a victory Monday night over Apollo rival  Robinson 50-47.

The win last night snapped a three-game losing streak left over from the Charleston Holiday Tournament and earned the Tigers a very important conference victory.

Paris got off to a sluggish start, allowing the Maroons to go on a 6-0 run to take an 11-5 lead after one quarter. The Tigers retaliated in the second quarter, thanks to the gritty play of Katie Spesard and Allison Englum. The two players combined for eight points and sparked a 14-1 run late in the quarter, giving the Tigers a 19-14 lead at the half.

The teams traded baskets throughout the second half and Paris was able to jump out to a nine point advantage before Robinson came storming back. Led by their center Kelsey Dirks, the Maroons cut the lead to two late in the game. Jessica Rose was fouled on the inbound with eight seconds and was able to hit one of two free throws to extend the lead to three. Both teams traded steals in the end of regulation and the Tigers earned the hard fought victory.

The Tigers played tough defensively, holding Robinson to around 25% shooting and was able to force several turnovers. Coach Abernathy praised his team's toughness and credited several players for their effort. Allison Englum led the Tigers in scoring with 10 points. Paris improves to 10-5, 3-2 in Apollo Conference play and will be back at Ernie Eveland Gym on Thursday to take on the Salem Wildcats. That game will be broadcast right here on Paris Country 1440 WPRS.
