Gas Prices! Posted May 16, 2012 by Pam Schalburg

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am sick and tired of gas prices bouncing around all of the time.  I really don't think a holiday gives the Oil Ogres the right to raise prices, especially, when the cost of crude per barrell is down.

In Terre Haute alone, it jumped 30 cents overnight, and then the next day dropped 10 cents.  You do the math...that's still a 20 cent jump and Memorial Weekend isn't for another 9 days!

Time Lapse Video: Watch Freedom Tower Being Built Posted May 1, 2012 by Pam Schalburg

Monday, April 30th, over ten years after September 11th, the Freedom Tower at One World Trade Center finally reclaimed the title of "Tallest Building in New York".

At 3:30 in the afternoon, workers installed columns for the 100th floor, and brought the height to 1,271 feet.  That's 21 feet higher than the observation deck at the Empire State Building, the tallest building in New York since 9/11.

Here are three more facts:

The Empire State Building is still taller if you include its antenna.  But the actual FLOORS of the Empire State Building stop right where the Freedom Tower is now . . . and there are still four more floors of the Freedom Tower to build.

The final height will be 1,776 feet, to represent 1776:  The year the Declaration of Independence was signed.  That's 325 feet taller than the Willis Tower in Chicago . . . a.k.a. the Sears Tower . . . making it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Here's another symbolic gesture:  It'll be 408 feet taller than the Twin Towers were.  But that 408 feet will be an antenna.  So it's not really trying to 'out-do' the buildings the terrorists destroyed, because that's not the point.

Here's a time-lapse video showing the construction so far.

You can check out a graph comparing the world's tallest buildings here.

Here's another time lapse video.

I am humbled by the beauty of The Freedom Tower and what it means to me.  It's a beautiful tribute to those who died.  It symbolizes America's strenghth in overcoming those who tried to destroy us.   I can't help but feel patriotic as I see this one, beautiful, reflectic tower and say, e pluribus unum, out of many, one.  One amazing tower from the devestation of the many who died where it stands,

And that's my opinion!  Pam

Rush's Apology Posted March 6, 2012 by Pam Schalburg

Rush opened up his show Monday with an explanation detailing why he apologized this past Saturday.

"This is the the mistake I made. In fighting them, I became like them (the Liberals). Against my own instincts, I descended to their level by using those 2 words (slut and prostitute). I feel very badly about that. I've always tried to maintain a very high degree of those two words distracted from the point I was trying to make. Again, I sincerely apologize for using those two words. I don't think she is either of those two words. The apology was sincere. It was not about anything else. No ulterior motive. Pure simple heartfelt. All the theories and all the experts are wrong."

You can read - or listen to - the entire Rush Limbaugh apology here.

Haven't we all said something in the "heat of the moment" that we wish we would have said differently?  I was not offended by Rush's comments.  I understand why he apologized, but I don't believe that he needed to apologize for what he said.  I agree with what he called Ms. Fluke.

And by the way, if Rush 'toned it down'.......who would listen????

And that's my 'pinion.

Apology be DAMNED! Posted February 24, 2012 by Pam Schalburg

Apology be DAMNED!

I cannot believe that our President, again, supports the Muslim Community of Afghanistan OVER AMERICA by apologizing for the burning of Qurans, which had cryptic, anti-American messages in them.   How can anyone with any intelligence support him?

Oh, wait.  Isn’t this the same Afghanistan that had Osama Bin Laden living near a police station for over a year before we found him?

Obama needs to be a one-term-president!  If not, the America we know and love will be non-existent.  Your children and grandchildren will be the ones who will suffer the consequences.  It bothers me that his stupidity is placing the burden on the shoulders of future generations.  And I fear that they will not be able to rise above the problems we have created for them.

Right to Work...Just Say NO! Posted January 27, 2012 by Pam Schalburg

Leave Unions and Union-based workers alone!  Unions have been around for decades.  Now in a poor attempt to solve the jobs and money crisis, they want to bust up one more thing that has worked well all along.  That's just stupid!

There are plenty of jobs that do not require you to join a union.  So if you don't want to pay union dues, don't go into a trade that is union-based.  Leave the Unions alone!

Merry Christmas..With No Apology Posted December 23, 2011 by Pam Schalburg

Merry Christmas!

I wish everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a safe and HAPPY NEW YEAR!  If this offends you, I offer no apology.  I am a Christian.  As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, Our Savior, I am caught up in the emotions of this blessed time we, as Christians, celebrate.

I have many things to be very thankful for.  So as Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus, I too, am caught up in all the Glory of the Season.

As a Christian, I am open-minded to the other holidays that are celebrated at, or near, this time.  I am not offended if someone offers me a greeting of their religious or non-religious background.  So if “Merry Christmas” from me offends you, that makes me more thankful that I am Christian!

…..and that’s my Christian opinion.

Merry Christmas!

Thanksgiving: A Time to Give Thanks Posted November 22, 2011 by Pam Schalburg

Family gatherings and Thanksgiving feasts make us feel all warm and fuzzy.   Not everyone is fortunate enough to have this feeling.  I am lucky enough to be on the warm and fuzzy list, so I have a lot to be thankful for.  What about you?

Here are some of the things that I am thankful for:

  • A great husband, who is a great provider.
  • My two grown children, who are also great providers for their families and spouses.
  • My three awesome grandchildren that I absolutely adore.
  • Our health.
  • My work family.  I have a great group of friends that I work with and a wonderful work “Grandson.”
  • Great friends.
  • God, the Father Almighty, who listens whether I praise Him or bring my worries to Him.
  • Fearless men and women of our great military who protect us in our great nation and abroad.  Because of them, I enjoy the freedoms that all Americans have.

Last but not least, I am thankful for my right to VOTE.  In the next election, I can hopefully help keep Obama out of the White House and get some of the Bozos in the Capital Building voted out!!!!

Thank you to Our Veterans! Posted November 11, 2011 by Pam Schalburg

Today is Veterans Day!

Veterans Day is to honor ALL veterans . . . both living and dead . . . the ones who served in wartime AND peacetime.

Those who have died or have been wounded since World War I is around 1.8 MILLION. I am truly grateful to our brave men and women of the military who have served, still serve, been wounded, or have made the ultimate sacrifice.   If it weren't for them, we would not be able to honor them today!  Cory Schalburg, I am proud of you and love you!  Keep safe!

-Pam

Here are six interesting facts about Veterans Day you might not know.

#1.)  There Are Over 22 Million War Veterans Living in the U.S.  That's according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

It includes 1.7 million veterans from World War Two, 2.2 million from Korea, 7.3 million from Vietnam, 5 million from Afghanistan and Iraq, and 500,000 from the Persian Gulf War.

#2.)  Veteran's Day Was Originally Called "Armistice Day."  November 11th, 1919 was the first anniversary of the end of World War One.

And Armistice Day was originally supposed to honor veterans of THAT war.  But now it extends to ALL veterans.  Congress made it a national holiday in 1938, then renamed it Veterans Day in 1954.

#3.)  "God Bless America" Debuted on the Radio for Veteran's Day in 1938.  Irving Berlin wrote it in 1918, but it was another 20 years before he changed the lyrics and turned it into the version WE all know.

It actually debuted as part of an Armistice Day radio special on November 10th, the day BEFORE Veteran's Day.

#4.)  The Official Symbol of Veterans Day is the Poppy.  In 1918, a woman in Georgia named Moina Belle Michael read a John McCrae poem called "In Flanders Fields", and it inspired her to wear red poppies as a way of remembering.

The poem includes the line, "In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses row on row."  (Flanders Fields is a World War One battleground and cemetery in Belgium.)

#5.)  The Motto of the Department of Veterans Affairs Is a Quote from Abraham Lincoln.  The motto is, "To care for him who shall have borne the battle."  It's from the final paragraph of Lincoln's second inaugural address.

#6.)  71% of Veterans Voted in the 2008 Presidential Election.  That's according to the U.S. Census Bureau.  63% of NON-veterans voted

Share Your Reflections on September 11th Posted September 8, 2011 by Pam Schalburg

As we near the 10 year mark since September 11th, let's reflect on our experiences.

As for me, I was sitting in my office here at Midwest Communications when the program director came out of the studio and said there had been a terrible accident.  A plane hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center.  I jumped up from my desk and ran into the studio to watch the coverage on TV.  I remember telling him there was no way that this was an accident.  I don’t even remember there being any close calls before so I was sure this was no accident.  Yet, he was sure I was wrong.  I remember looking at the clock and hoping that those offices weren’t open yet.

Unfortunately as the events unfolded, I wasn’t wrong.  It was no accident.  The complete and utter disbelief was overwhelming.   I also remember telling the small group that had gathered that this will definitely change our lives forever….and they all thought I was over-reacting!

What were you doing when our country was struck by the tragic events of 9/11?

Kudos to Tanoos Posted September 1, 2011 by Pam Schalburg

I am so glad that the Superintendant of Vigo County Schools, Dan Tanoos, has forbidden school bus travel on I-70 while the road construction is going on.  It's such a mess and there have already been so many accidents.  With more areas under construction, we can assume the amount of accidents will, unfortunately, increase.

Thank you Dan Tanoos for thinking of all of our Vigo County students and doing what you can to keep them safe going to and from school.  Parents and guardians have enough to worry about without the additional risk factor involved with such a dangerous area.

And that's my 'pinion!

Is Goshen College Un-American? Posted August 31, 2011 by Pam Schalburg

The President of Goshen College, a Mennonite college in Northern Indiana, has decided to ban the playing and singing of The National Anthem at all of their events.  In its place, the song of choice will be "America the Beautiful."

An AMERICAN COLLEGE in AMERICA?!?  And I don’t care that it's a Mennonite college.  They, along with any other institution that refuses to play AND sing The National Anthem is a DISGRACE to this great nation!  I hate that a few have such a strong voice and change things at a whim!!!

Too violent, they say of our nation’s song.  It describes the struggle of a young nation trying to form and break away from British control, and all the people who perished for us to become the great nation we are today.  Good God, when are these types of people going to get their heads on straight and overcome this massive stupidity that has taken our nation by storm?

I bet they pass out rose-colored glasses when you enroll too!

And that's my good ol' American 'pinion!
